Jobs at Context Travel

Strategy and Operations Associate

Location: New York, NY

Department: Program Management

Type: Full Time

Min. Experience: Experienced

The basics

Context provides expert-led tours and experiences in the world's cultural capitals (50 & counting). Founder-led & bootstrapped until 2017, the company recently raised growth funding to deepen its offering, build out an executive team, and expand globally. With a cult following for over a decade (NPS >90%!), we've got an exciting base to build on.

To help us get there, we’re looking for an experienced Strategy and Operations Manager to join our growing team. In this role you'll have two main areas of responsibility: structuring and managing strategic projects while also enabling the ongoing success and improvement of Context's day-to-day operations. This is a new role for Context and you'll have the opportunity to shape it. To be successful doing so, you'll need to be an independent, data-savvy thinker and doer who can bring structure to ambiguous challenges and then roll up your sleeves to get things done. You'll also need to be able to work collaboratively across the company, including the globally distributed Program team.

As a certified B Corp, Context offers competitive salaries and solid benefits, including unlimited vacation and Context tours, health and 401k, an educational stipend, and parental leave. This is a full-time position based in our New York or Philadelphia office, with semi-regular travel to Context destinations (2-4x/year).

More about the role

By the end of your first month, you should:

  • Be familiar with our core volume and quality metrics and able to independently access and analyze the data you need using Excel or sql
  • Understand the fundamentals of the Program Manager role and workflow (including tooling), with a grasp of some of the main needs and pain points
  • Have begun to develop relationships with the mostly-remote team of Program Managers (PMs) as well as other functional leads (mostly NYC- and Philly-based)
  • Have taken at least 4 Context walks

In the first ~3 months, you will:

  • Take responsibility for delivering collaborative projects relating to our walk portfolio, scheduling/fulfillment approach, and/or guide performance management
  • Become a thought partner for PMs looking to grow and continuously improve their region's performance
  • Directly work with and mentor the analyst(s) who support the Program team
  • Build and improve the feedback loop between Program/operations and tech/data, including potentially managing our backlog and continuous improvement projects

More about you

The strongest candidates will likely have a bachelors' or masters degree with 3-5 years experience in some combination of consulting, product management, or lean operations. You'll also need a passion for experiencing and learning about new places and get excited at the prospect of building and growing a business!

Day-to-day, you'll need to be able to:

  • Bring structure and analysis (including data) to business decisions big and small
  • Project manage strategic initiatives that involve colleagues across time zones, functions, and levels
  • Appropriately consult the PM team, both to get their input and to generate buy-in
  • Monitor daily/weekly ops metrics/trends and identify issues requiring further examination
  • Get excited about travel and in particular learning through travel, as well as understand what interests our clients and motivates them to take our tours!

In terms of hard skills, that means:

  • Comfort with data: Excel (bonus if you can query in SQL or are interested to learn how) - we are transforming into a data-enabled company
  • Structured thinking: we're a growth and execution-oriented organization and a structured approach to data and communication helps cut through the noise to what matters
  • Empathy: sincere interest in remotely located team members and their work
  • Written communication: clear & succinct email, slidewriting, and likely project briefs
