Business Development & Sales Director

Context is looking for a business development and sales director in its Philadelphia office. This person ought to have a mind for numbers, a love of travel and the arts, and experience leading and inspiring teams. This is a unique, people-focused position that touches many aspects of business management and sits at the intersection of strategy, growth, and operations.


Context is a small, dynamic company in the tours and activities sector of the travel industry. We organize expert-led tours for the intellectually curious in 40 cities worldwide and operate in an increasingly competitive space.


As business development and sales director you will report directly to the CEO and be responsible for a seven-person customer service department and, pairing with a program director based in Berlin, manage the daily operations of the business. The ideal candidate will be a systems thinker with good listening skills and track record as a proactive manager who can create a culture where people perform at their best. Experience required includes 2-5 years as a manager of teams, experience and comfort working with remote reports and colleagues, experience managing budgets in excess of $100k, and direct experience in customer service and sales.


Part of the responsibilities of this job include overseeing business development of indirect sales channels, including travel agents, OTAs, and other travel distribution. Experience in this area and a knack for selling is a plus. Experience doing this in travel is a double plus.


As a small organization everyone wears several hats at Context, and one of the hats that you’ll wear will be to manage the administrative operations of the Philadelphia office, including some receivables, payables, and HR work. Here again a systems thinker will shine, as will candidates with a mind for numbers and possibly some experience with bookkeeping, accounting, or business administration.


Context enjoys a strong customer base and cult-like following. In this role you will be responsible for maintaining and strengthening this part of the brand. You will need to be customer-oriented and also have a genuine love for travel, arts, and culture—the things that inspire our customers.


Context operates across 24 time zones and has staff based in over a dozen cities around the world. As a result, we lean heavily on technology. In this position, you will need to be very tech forward and as comfortable running a meeting on Slack or Hangout as you are running one in a conference room.


You should also be hyper-organized, continually optimize for efficiency, and be able to manage multiple projects at one time.
