Italy, Greece and Turkey - Context Travel Program Manager Job Description

Is your interest piqued by the culture and history of Italy, Greece & Turkey? Do you spend your time wandering in awe through museums, churches and archaeological remains?  Do you like to indulge in its creative cuisine washed down with delicious wines? We are looking for somebody to work full-time in our Rome office, taking care of our critically acclaimed walking seminars in Italy, Greece & Turkey, working side by side with scholars from all over the world who lead these high-quality expert tours.

Our organization is all about Context. We believe that true learning can only happen with context, and that philosophy penetrates everything we do, right down to our name. Whether it's exploring the ancient Roman Empire along via dei Fori Imperiali, or the Renaissance through Michelangelo’s David, or Neapolitan cuisine with your hands in pizza dough - we make sure our clients' experience is both memorable and authentic.

Our ideal candidate will have lived or travelled extensively in the cities where we operate in Italy, Greece & Turkey and be based in Rome, where Context was founded in 2003. S/he will have a strong background in humanities and a strong business acumen, speak fluent Italian, and keen on getting to know our programs the Context way: in great depth.

Context was founded in Rome in 2003 and has since established itself as one of the top cultural tour companies of the world, expanding to more than 40 cities around the world. We are listed on Conde Nast Traveler’s Top Travel Specialists and we are a certified B Corp.

The job

Among others, these are your main tasks:

  • Manage a pool of around 180 freelance experts and academics who lead our walking seminars in Italy, Greece & Turkey
  • Work with numbers and statistics to project demand for new docents and recruit accordingly as Context grows in this region
  • Foster the docent community by organizing and attending events
  • Manage the walk portfolio and product appearance in each of your cities
  • Find ways to promote your region, by liaising with local partners and influencers, and by creating blog posts and contributing to social media
  • Assure a clockwork functioning of the operations and logistics (ticketing, car & boat services, etc) in your region, with the help of a team you lead
  • Improve and build new systems and procedures in the team
  • Communicate with clients and offer them world-class customer service
  • Work alongside 2 other colleagues in the Rome office

The requirements

  • English mother-tongue or equally-high level - you will have to write correspondence impeccably
  • You have experience managing people
  • Master's degree (ideally in humanities) and a strong business acumen
  • A passion for traveling and learning about world culture, history and art
  • Experience in the travel industry is highly desirable. Experience in recruitment and proven leadership experience
  • Administrative excellence: highly organized and experience managing lots of details
  • Ultimate people person. Enjoy networking and talking to people. You are not afraid of grabbing the phone and confronting situations
  • You enjoy working with spreadsheets. Pivot tables and budget sheets are familiar terms
  • A can-do and nothing-is-impossible approach
  • Demonstrated experience working both as part of a team and independently
  • Willingness to travel (sometimes over weekends) and attending events outside office hours
  • You need to have appropriate documentation to live and work in Rome
